9th Chapter

Paul speaks throughout his letter to the Romans of his continuing desire to see the Salvation of the people of Israel.  We will see in the following Chapter 10 of Romans, that Paul will acknowledge the Jews' zeal toward God, but sees their natural failure to understand the Righteousness of God Almighty.

1 I say the TRUTH IN Christ, I lie not, my conscience also bearing me witness in the Holy Spirit,

For I have great heaviness and continual sorrow in my heart.

It would seem that the deadness of many of the souls of Israel has been witnessed by Paul through God's Spirit. The witness of the devastations of sin brings great sadness to Paul.  However, Paul's following statement would appear to be from the natural man, whose compassion, says: For 'I could wish'. While we exist in this form, the 'I' in the natual man continues to express itself, drawing attention to the 'Me, Myself and the redundant I'.  The 'I could wish', seems to solidify our premise, for 'could wish' is what a natural man would convey to impress his listeners of his piety. It is highly unlikely that the all knowing Spirit of the Living God would say "I could wish that I was cursed".

For I could wish that myself were accursed from Christ for my brethren, my kinsmen according to the flesh:

Who are Israelites; to whom pertains the adoption, and the glory, and the covenants, and the giving of the law, and the service of God, and the Promises;
Whose people are the Father's, and of whom as concerning the flesh, Christ came, Who is over all, God blessed for ever. Amen.
(Romans 9 verse 4 thru 5.)
Not as though the Word of God has taken none effect. For they are not all Israel, which are of Israel:

Neither, because they are the seed of Abraham, are they all children [of Abraham]: But, In Isaac shall your seed [children] be called.

That is: They which are the children of the flesh, these are not the children of God: But the children of the Promise are counted for the Seed.

For this is the Word of Promise: At this time will I come, and Sarah shall have a son.

10 And not only this; but when Rebecca also had conceived by one, even by our father Isaac;

11  ? ? ? ? ? ?  (For the children being not yet born, neither having done any good or evil, that the purpose of God according to election might stand, not of works, but of Him that calls)

12 It was said unto her: The elder [Esau] shall serve the younger [Jacob].

13 As it is written, Jacob have I loved, but Esau have I hated. (Malachi 1 verse 2 thru 3.)

Although it is not perfectly clear, the Love of God, for both Esau and Jacob would probably have been present before and after the twins were born, but we have seen that in the passage of time that Esau, in the hunger of his flesh, chose a bowl of porridge over God's Spiritual Blessing of the first born. Yahweh God hated the thoughtless action of Esau when he negotiated with Jacob and sold away the right of the first born for the lesser bowl of food. In affect, Esau despised the Promised Gift of God, and therefore Esau despised the Gift Giver, the God of the Living. Willful sin is exacerbated in the offspring. So it is today with many of the called of today.  God's Provision for LIFE IN Jesus Christ is spurned by those who trade LIFE for the wanton desires of their flesh. The once rightful heritage of Esau was laid waste, and no matter what the Edomite people of Esau would attempt to create in their desolate land, Yahweh God would either prevent or tear it down.  The Edomites of Esau, shall be called the wall of wickedness and the people of whom the Lord will have indignation forever.

14 What shall we say then? Is there unrighteousness with God? God forbid.

15 For He said to Moses, I will have mercy on whom I will have mercy, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.

The Eternal Yahweh God knew, in the flow of His creation of time, the disposition of all the people that would come upon the earth, therefore Yahweh God knew who would follow their own destructive will, and those who would seek to know the Living Will of the Creator.  Yahweh has compassion on all that will hear His Call, and then with a true heart they would turn to His Merciful Grace IN His Salvation, Yeshua haMashiach.

16 So then it is not of him that wills, nor of him that runs, but of God that shows His mercy.

Without God's intervention in time, then the disposition of all of mankind has them already buried in their sin and death, but Yahweh God has mercy for those whom He knows will turn from their wickedness, and toward His slain Lamb, the risen Son of Man, Jesus Christ.

For as many as received Him, to them He gave power to become the sons of God, even to them that believe on His Name; Which were born, not of blood, nor of the will of the flesh, nor of the will of man, but of the Will of God. (John 1 verse 12 thru 13.)

17 For the Scripture said unto Pharaoh: Even for this same purpose have I raised you up, that I might show My Power in you, and that My Name might be declared throughout all the earth. (See Exodus 9 verse 16.)

18 Therefore He has mercy on whom He will have mercy, and whom He will, He hardens [with their own unrepented sin].

19 You will say then unto me: Why does He yet find fault? For who has resisted His Will?

The Will of God is that all would repent and turn toward the Saving Grace IN the Son of Man, for Jesus Christ is the Lord our Righteousness.

20 But Nay  O man; who are you that replies against God? Shall the thing formed say to him that formed it: Why have you made me like this?

21 Has not the potter power over the same lump of clay to make one vessel unto honor, and another unto dishonor?

22  Having endured with much longsuffering, what if God, willing to show His wrath, and  make His power known to the vessels of wrath that are fitted [worthy] for destruction? [They remain entrenched in their will of sin.]

23 And that He might make known the riches of His Glory on the vessels of mercy, which He had previously prepared unto His Glory,

24 Even us, whom He has called, not of the Jews only, but also of the Gentiles?

In the ignorance of prideful man, even the saved think that the Almighty God created each one of them individually, wherefore, our self idolatry is manifested in our foolish suppositions.  When Yahweh God created Man named Adam with Adam's wife Ishshah, to be renamed Eve after Man's fall into the mire of sin, the all-knowing Almighty God had already set in motion for the ongoing generation of the genetic seed of mankind to reproduce mankind in His Image.  Because of Adam's sin the Likeness of God's Holy Spirit had departed from Man, leaving mankind to their own choices of good and evil, without the Spirit of God's Love. Logically, the Good Will of God would never create man to be sinners, despising the Creator of TRUTH and LIFE.  The heresy purporting that God had predestined some to damnation and others to LIFE, originated out of man ignorantly misinterpreting LIFE'S Scriptures.

25 As He said also in Osee [Hosea]: I will call them My people, which were not My people; and her beloved, which was not beloved.

26 And it shall come to pass, that in the place where it was said unto them: You are not My people; there shall be those called the children of the living God.

27 Esaias also cries concerning Israel: Though the number of the children of Israel be as the sand of the sea, [only] a remnant shall be saved:

28 For He will finish the work, and cut it short in righteousness: Because a short work will the Lord make upon the earth.

29 And as Esaias said before [hand]: Except the Lord of Sabaoth had left us a seed, we would have been as Sodoma, and been made like unto Gomorrha.

30 What shall we say then? That the Gentiles, which followed not after righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness which is of Faith.

31 But Israel, which followed after the law of [for their] righteousness, has not attained to righteousness through [their works of obedience to] the law.

32 Why? Because they sought it [righteousness] not by faith, but as it were by the works of [obedience to] the law. For they stumbled at that Stumbling Stone [Jesus Christ].

Stumbling Stone and Rock of Offence to that of belief in Him

33 As it is written, Behold, I lay in Zion a Stumbling Stone and Rock of Offence: But whosoever believes in Him shall not be ashamed.

Speaking of Immanuel, Isaiah rebukes Israel:

He [Jesus/Yeshua] shall be a Sanctuary, but a Stone of Stumbling and a Rock of Offence, to both of the houses of Israel.  (See Isaiah 8 verse 8 thru 14.)

Scripture in Isaiah 28 verse 16

As it is written: Behold, I lay in Zion for a Foundation, a Stone, a tried Stone, a precious corner Stone, a sure Foundation: Whosoever believes on Him [the Foundation that is Yeshua] shall not be ashamed. (See Isaiah 28 verse 16 thru 18.)

In Matthew 22, Mark 12 and Luke 20, we see where the Wisdom of  Jesus is tried by the Jews.  First the Pharisees came to the Lord Christ in order to confound Him in His Words.   The Herodian Pharisees began with flattery, and then set forth their treacherous question. What do you think? Is it lawful to pay tribute to Caesar or not?  Jesus said to them: You hypocrites, why do you tempt Me? Show Me the tribute money. And the Pharisees gave to Him a penny. Then Christ asked them: Whose image and inscription is this? They said to Him: Caesars. Then Jesus said to the Pharisees: Therefore render to Caesar the things that are Caesar's, and unto God the things that are God's. The Pharisees dumb founded in Jesus' answer then left the Lord and went their own way. (See Matthew 22 verse 32.)

Then the same day, there came to the Lord Jesus, the Sadducees, whose sect of religion had taught them that there is no resurrection of the dead. These Sadducees believed what they were taught without question.  The Sadducees would present to Jesus/Yeshua their hypothetical woman and her marriage to each of seven childless brothers.  The matter concerned the the law, which required that with the death of a childless husband, then the wife was required to marry the next brother and bring up seed [children] to the deceased brother. With this understanding, the Sadducees presented their hypothetical problem of seven childless brothers, and the one wife, in order to trick the Lord.  In essence, if each of the seven brothers would die childless then in sequence she was to marry each one of them until she either bore children or died. The Sadducees then asked the Lord: Which of the seven brothers would be married to the woman in the resurrection of the dead?

24 And Jesus answered them and said: Are you not in error, for you do not know the Scriptures nor the Power of God?

25 For when they shall rise from the dead, they neither marry, nor are given in marriage; but they are as the angels which are in heaven.

26 And as touching the dead, that they rise: Have you not read in the book of Moses, how in the [flaming] bush God spoke unto him [Moses], saying, I AM the God of Abraham, and the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob?

27 He is not the God of the dead, but the God of the living: Therefore you do greatly err. (Mark 12 verse 25 thru 27.)

It is not only the Jews of any time period  that greatly err in their understanding of the God of the Living, but also there are Christians, declaring their one time born again faith, that do not believe in the receiving into their sinful bodies of flesh, the Word declared LIFE giving Blood of Jesus Christ that He gave for the remission of their unbelieving sins of death.  The self of humanity never goes away, but what humanity does with self is the issue that separates us from the Almighty God of the Living. The self of humanity has the propensity to follow after sin and elevate its self centered flesh into idolatry: Therefore, the so called saved, should be very careful of the knowledge they possess and that knowledge doesn't puff them up in pride and reveal their own idolatry of death in the self centeredness of their flesh.

Declares the Lord Jesus Christ: God is the God of the Living, and not the God of the dead. (See Matthew 22 verse 32.) (See Isaiah 8 verse 18 thru 19.)
